Although John spent three weeks staying in the Holly Inn and attending a golf camp in 1967, his real relationship with Pinehurst began in 1993 when he and his wife Carolyn purchased The Cottage Colony School House in the Village. It was then a second, vacation home it they also considered it a likely retirement destination. And while John didn’t officially retire until 2021, it become their primary residence in 2012.

John’s interest in the history of Pinehurst led to volunteering for the Historic Preservation Commission, on which he has served since 2019 and chaired from January 2023 until his election to the Village Council in November. During this time, he participated in or led the updating of the Standards under which new construction or exterior modifications to buildings in the Pinehurst Historic District receive Certificates of Appropriateness.

Professionally, John worked in the finance and investment world for over 40 years, initially for 25 years at Goldman, Sachs in Detroit and New York City. After retiring as a Managing Director in 2003, John has worked for, advised and/or invested in a number of investment firms and early-stage technology companies. John grew up outside of Detroit, graduated from the Cranbrook School, received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Brown University and is a past Trustee of the Morristown Beard School.
