What is a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)?

Source: Federal Law - 23 USC 134 & 49 USC 1607
 
An MPO is:
 

-Federally mandated and funded for Urbanized Areas (UAs) over 50,000 as determined by the U.S. Census

-A transportation policy making-organization

-Made of representatives from member governments and other governmental transportation authorities

-Conducts the 3-C planning process (Continuing, Cooperative, and Comprehensive)
